How to find federal grants and fellowships closing soon (Grants.gov, NSF, NIH)
Grants.gov lists open federal funding, while NSF Award Search and NIH RePORTER show who already won. Checking all three by hand every week is slow. This guide shows how to pull them into one deduplicated table and keep it fresh.
Steps
- Open Grant & Fellowship Radar on Apify and enter keywords for your field, for example "machine learning".
- Keep all three sources on (Grants.gov, NSF, NIH). Set the awards lookback to 90 days to see recent winners.
- Set a deadline window, such as opportunities closing in the next 60 days, and choose eligibility filters if you are a nonprofit, university or individual.
- Run it, then export to CSV, Google Sheets or JSON.
- Add a weekly schedule with new-since-last-run mode, so later runs only return new opportunities.
Example input
{
"keywords": [
"machine learning",
"artificial intelligence"
],
"sources": [
"grantsgov",
"nsf",
"nih"
],
"awardsLookbackDays": 90,
"maxItems": 40
}
Paste this into the Actor's JSON input on Apify, or pass it to the API with the apify-client library.
Tips
- Use 2-4 specific keywords; broad words like "research" return thousands of rows.
- Turn on deadline alerts (30 and 7 days) only for opportunities you actually plan to apply to.
- Past-winner rows help you see typical award sizes and which institutions win.
Limits
Covers federal sources only (no state or private foundation grants). Always confirm deadlines and eligibility on the official Grants.gov notice before applying.
